Return and Earn was established by the NSW Government as a litter reduction initiative, specifically targeting the types of drink containers commonly found littered in NSW. However, it is now an important part of keeping valuable materials in use rather than landfill.
Containers such as wine and spirit bottles are currently being considered for inclusion in Return and Earn by the NSW Government.
The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) received many detailed submissions following consultation on options to improve the recycling of drink containers and is continuing to work on the issue ahead of a decision. For more information, see the Discussion Paper at https://yoursay.epa.nsw.gov.au/driving-nsws-circular-economy
We recommend you follow our social media channels for all the latest scheme updates. In the meantime, the types of containers that are eligible for a refund have not changed.
If you believe the container is eligible for a refund, please contact us and share photos of your rejected drink container. Our team can investigate whether this container has been registered as eligible
Drink containers must remain uncrushed and unbroken for our machines to read their barcode to confirm they are eligible and provide you with your refund. Ensure drink containers are empty, with the label and barcode intact when returning them. If a drink container is in a condition where it cannot be scanned but is recyclable, please dispose of it in your recycling bin.
Drink containers should be empty, uncrushed, unbroken, and have their original label intact. If your container does not have a label, it may not be recognised as an eligible container and will not be eligible for a refund. If a drink container is in a condition where it cannot be scanned but is recyclable, please dispose of it in your recycling bin.
1. Empty your drink containers. Make sure there’s no liquid inside.
2. Leave the label on. The barcode on the label helps identify it as a returnable container.
3. Keep it uncrushed and unbroken. The container must be in good condition to be accepted.
4. Leave the lid on (where possible). Your lids will be recycled too.
5. Store your containers in a reusable bag, tub or basket. Try to avoid single-use plastic when storing and transporting your containers to reduce waste.
